The policies associated with placing students into mathematics classes at Dixie State University follow published guidelines that are structured according to demonstrated skill levels. Each student is placed into their next mathematics course based on one of the following:
Students are advised that a long hiatus from formal math instruction could compromise their ability to perform well in class. For this reason, even if high ACT scores were obtained in high school, placement scores or course grades more than two years old are considered invalid for placement purposes. In this situation, new placement scores using the ALEKS PPL math placement test will be required.
Students who wish to improve their mathematics placement are encouraged to utilize the ALEKS PPL review software before attempting the ALEKS PPL math placement exam. This review can be completed at the student’s own pace online or in a more structured format in the Math Bridge Course (see below). Students can use their DSU sign-on credentials to sign up for ALEKS PPL here. A 12-month ALEKS PPL subscription currently costs $20 and includes diagnostic testing and individualized remediation. When a student is ready, they can pay $10 to take a proctored version of the exam at the DSU Testing Center for course placement. The DSU Math Boot Camp is intended for students who missed the ACT or College Placement Test cut off to place into their next math class or have a placement score that is too old to be valid. There are two tracks: the Non-STEM Track is for students whose terminal math course will be MATH 1030 or MATH 1040. The goal of this course is to help students place into and prepare for their general education math course or beyond. The DSU Math Boot Camp is for admitted DSU students and costs $20 (the price of the ALEKS PPL software). Space is limited. So apply early!
August 5-8, 2019 1 PM – 4 PM.
Starting in the Fall of 2019, the Department of Mathematics will offer a one-credit bridge course using the ALEKS PPL placement software. This course will give students a structured format and support of an instructor as they review and prepare to take the math placement exam. The goal of this class is to help each student eliminate one semester of college mathematics from their schedule.

All advanced classes require one of the previous classes as a prerequisite.
In addition, students are advised that a long hiatus from formal math instruction could compromise their ability to perform in class. This is true even if high ACT scores were obtained in high school, and several years have elapsed since the tests were taken.
Placement scores or classes with scores/grades more than two years old will be considered invalid. In this situation, new placement scores will be required. A CPT score (College Placement Test) must be obtained from the Dixie College Testing Center. The Math portion of the test is $10 and can be taken anytime during regular testing center hours.
